(NEWS) A train finally to Khajuraho

Khajuraho, one of India's best known tourist spots, will finally get a rail link from February.

Railway officials said work on the 64-km track length between Mahoba and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh was progressing at a fast pace.

Once the track was laid between Mahoba and Khajuraho, it would be possible for tourists to take trains from Agra or Jhansi directly to avoid a hard five-hour drive by road from Jhansi.

Khajuraho, a Unesco recognised heritage site in Madhya Pradesh, is popular for its erotic statues. The Rajput Chandelas built the sprawling temple complex near Khajuraho village a thousand years ago.

Within an amazingly short span of 100 years, from 950 AD-1050 AD, all the temples were constructed. Today, however, of the original 85, only 22 survive the ravages of time.

The rail connection to Khajuraho will be from Mahoba, which is already connected with Jhansi, Railway official B. Dhillon told IANS.
