Over 200 farmer suicides in Bundelkhand: Sharad & Rajnath

New Delhi: Till sometime back Vidharbha and Telengana regions were considered to be the graveyard of India farmers. But just hold on. Even other parts of India are also fast turning into a death trap for poor Indian cultivators too. And to top the list, Uttar Pradesh - the state considered to be the sugar bowl of India is providing no good reason to tillers of land to live. Yes, if figures provided by the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav are to be believed, as many as 203 farmers have committed suicide till November 2007 in various parts of Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh due to acute famine.

 

Sharad Yadav, who along with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh addressed a joint rally of Bundelkhand Bachao Morcha in the national capital on Wednesday, blamed both the central and the Uttar Pradesh government for the current plight of the people of Bundelkhand. "I demand that this area be declared a famine-hit area," he said, exhorting the government to “give Rs 5,00,000 each to the families of those who have committed suicide.”

The JD-U leader even criticised UP Chief Minister Mayawati by saying, "The poor who voted her to power are dying. She says if you make me the prime minister, I will give you Bundelkhand state." Attacking Mayawati further, Yadav said, "She is misusing her Dalit status. For her, the main issue is getting SPG (state-sponsored security cover)." Yadav even accused the centre as well as UP by saying that she (Mayawati) is blaming the centre, and the centre is blaming the previous National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, but how long can you blame past governments?

Criticising Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who recently visited Bundelkhand, Yadav said, "He should do something. When you are in government, you have to act, you cannot behave like the opposition." (IANS)
