After Five Years, Monsoon Brings Smile to Parched Bundelkhand

Good rainfall this monsoon season in Bundelkhand region of the state has brought some cheer at a time when the region has been reeling under drought-like situation for the past five years.

Govt plans to extend PDS scheme in Bundelkhand districts

After launching the doorstep-delivery system for supply of foodgrains to BPL families in Sonbhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli districts, the Food and Civil Supplies department is now planning to extend the scheme to Jhansi, Banda, Lalitpur, Mahoba and Sitapur districts in Bundelkhand region.

MGNREGS & PDS have failed to benefit poorest Dalit households in Bundelkhand

The much lauded schemes like MGNREGS and Public Distribution System (PDS) have failed to benefit the poorest Dalit households in Bundelkhand region. According to a survey, over 52 per cent of the poor and needy households in the backward region of Bundelkhand did not get a single day of employment under the MGNREGS last year. The average number of days of work under MGNREGS in Bundelkhand is barely 20. This number is 21 days in Chitrakoot district, 19 days in Banda, 9 days in Mahoba, 26 days in Hamirpur and 31 days in Lalitpur district. In PDS scheme also, 63.5 per cent of the poor Dalit families in the region have no access to PDS grains in any category.

Bundelkhand remains laggard in utilising development funds by NABARD

The impoverished Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh remains laggard in utilising development funds sanctioned by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development (Nabard).

Under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), Nabard advances credit to the state government for various rural infrastructure projects, including canal, roads, flood control, bridges and irrigation.

This financial year, Bundelkhand has posted a poor 48 per cent disbursement to loan ratio compared to other regions in Uttar Pradesh.

Under RIDF tranches for 2010-11, Bundelkhand was sanctioned total loans worth Rs 1,222 crore, of which the disbursement stood at only Rs 583 crore.

In comparison, the eastern, western and central UP regions fared much better with respective comparative figures of Rs 3,034 crore (Rs 1,866 crore), Rs 1,338 crore (Rs 857 crore) and Rs 1,141 crore (Rs 695 crore).

More than 9000 projects under MGNREGS are still incomplete in Bundelkhand

The state government is yet to complete more than 9,000 tasks under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the Bundelkhand region this fiscal.
