बुंदेलखंड की वीर भूमि महोबा और आल्हा एक दूसरे के पर्याय हैं। महोबा की सुबह आल्हा से शुरू होती है और उन्हीं से खत्म। बुंदेलखंड का जन-जन आज भी चटकारे लेकर गाता है-

Bundelkhand region is known for its abundance of natural resources but today this is one of the poorest regions of the country. The total amount of current outstanding rural bank debts in Bundelkhand is Rs 4,370.32 crore. This is 21% more than 2010 when the total bank debts stood at Rs 3,613.22 crore. As many as 519 suicides have been reported from the seven districts of the parched and extremely backward region in the five months of this year. In the year 2009, 568 farmers and in 2010, 583 farmers have committed suicide due to various reasons in Bundelkhand as per official records. Taking suo moto action on the reports of farmer's suicide and distress in Bundelkhand region, Allahabad High Court tasked Uttar Pradesh and Central Government to submit report. Since 2002, three years have been declared drought-affected: in 2002, 2004 and 2009. Bundelkhand region covers seven districts of Uttar Pradesh (Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalipur and Mahoba) and six districts of Madhya Pradesh (Chhatarpur, Damoh, Datia, Panna, Sagar and Tikamgarh). Rivers like Ken, Betwa, Yamuna, Mandakini and many other seasonal rivers flow through Bundelkhand but the area is yet rain fed.

The indebtedness: The indebtedness among farmers can be understood by the official records that total amount of current outstanding bank debts in Bundelkhand is Rs 4,370.32 crore. This is 21% more than 2010 when the total bank debts stood at Rs 3,613.22 crore. In four of the worst affected districts- Banda, Hamirpur, Lalitpur and Jhansi, farmers owe banks about Rs. 2750 crores. Siddiqui (2011) revealed the fact that total loan outstanding of Rs. 1791 crore is only on the farmers of Chitrakoot Dham Karwi commissionaire.

Everything is in short supply here, especially hope. There was a flicker of it, though, when on April 30 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh came here with Rahul Gandhi. Maybe the people were expecting a miracle, an end to the misery created by season after season of bad crops and the resultant rising debt. Their hope proved to be short-lived. Since then, nine farmers have killed themselves in Banda district alone, the worst hit in a cluster of seven district that form the ravaged Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. The other six districts are Hamirpur, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Chitrakoot and Jalaun. Banda district hospital has reported around 330 cases of suicide between January and May this year.

Locals here say most of the suicides are by indebted farmers, their world darkened by the burden. The actual number, however, is difficult to tell. Official figures confirm 519 suicides in the seven districts in the first five months of this year. This figure includes all suicides. But even if one were to go by the official figures, there has been an alarming rise in the rate of suicides in the last five months. In the 12 months of 2009, there were 568 suicides in the seven districts against 519 in just the first five months of this year. In 2010, 583 suicides were recorded. Between 2001 and 2005, there were 1,275 cases of suicide (the period includes 2002 and 2004, two harsh drought years).

Migration from the parched lands of Bundelkhand is common. But the scene in Dadhat Maaf, a village in Kabrai tehsil of Mahoba is even bleaker. Nearly 90 % of its inhabitants have migrated out. Just about 250 people live in the village that had 3,000 population. The village has no water left-either for drinking or for washing.

Two hundred and fifty people living there are surviving on the water they scrape from 10 wells that have water at bed level. The other 240 wells are completely dry. The four hand pumps refused to yield water soon after the onset of the summers. The ground water level in the village has gone down to 120 feet-too difficult a depth to reach in the rocky belly of the earth there.

वर्ष 2003 से 24 अगस्त 2006 तक बुन्देलखण्ड में कुल मिलाकर 1040 आत्महत्याये बतौर केस दर्ज हुयी हैं। जिनमें कि 12 दहेज, 459 पारिवारिक तनाव, 86 व्यक्तिगत कारण, 371 अन्य अज्ञात कारण और 122 आत्महत्यायें कर्ज-भुखमरी के चलते बुन्देलखण्ड में आत्महत्या की तस्वीर में दिखाई देती हैं। गौर से देखिये इस खबर को जिसे पढ़कर इंसानी रूहत में सिरहन न उठे तो खबर का मसाला ही कम दिखाई पड़ेगा। जनपद बांदा के ब्लाक बदौसा मंे बीते 18.05.2011 को तंगहाली से परेशान एक और किसान जीवन की बाजी हार गया, 38 वर्षीय कर्जदार किसान ने खुद को जिन्दा फूंक डाला। यह खबर बुन्देलखण्ड के हर एक दैनिक समाचार पत्र की सुर्खियां हैं। कस्बा निवासी युवा किसान प्रमोद तिवारी ने वर्ष 2005 में अतर्रा स्थित भारतीय स्टेट बैंक कृषि विकास शाखा से टैक्टर लिया था। जिसका खाता नम्बर 11628887623 है। एक भी किस्त अदायगी न करने के चलते बैंक की तरफ से गत शनिवार तीस दिन के अन्दर मूलधन और ब्याज बैंक में जमा नहीं करने पर गिरफ्तारी और कुर्की का वारन्ट जारी कर दिया जायेगा। ऐसा बैंक प्रबन्धक के हाथों से लिखी कर्ज की राशि लगभग 2,46,221/- रूपये अंकित है। आनन फानन में हुयी इस आत्महत्या के बाद पारिवारिक जनों ने जनपद बांदा मंे पोस्टमार्टम के लिये किसान की लाश को लाये। रात 8ः30 बजे तक किसान के बड़े भाई और स्वैच्छिक संगठन किसान विकास क्षेत्रीय समिति, बदौसा संचालक वन्दना तिवारी, संरक्षक अरूण तिवारी मीडिया कर्मियों को बताते रहे कि छोटे भाई की मौत शराब की लत के कारण हुयी है। आये दिन घर में पत्नी गीता से मारपीट करना और पारिवारिक तनाव के कारण अवसाद ग्रसित होने से उन्होने इस घटना को अन्जाम दिया है। लाश के पोस्टमार्टम हो जाने तक खबर का रूख शराब की लत में युवक की मौत रहा लेकिन जैसे ही पारिवारिक जन कस्बा बदौसा पहुंचे तो इस घटना को कर्जदार किसान के रूप में तंगहाली और गरीबी से आजिज आत्महत्या का रूप दे दिया गया।

कहते हैं कि मन में दृढ़ संकल्प और इच्छाशक्ति हो तो कठिन से कठिन राह आसान हो जाती है। ऐसा ही कर दिखाया है भभुवा गांव के किसान के बेटे ब्रजेश ने। आईएएस परीक्षा में 556वीं रैंक हासिल कर परिवार ही नहीं जनपद का भी गौरव बढ़ाया है।

From just being homemakers, 20-odd women in Karvi town in Uttar Pradesh are also earning for their families by offering catering services under the brand name of 'Apni Rasoi'(Our Kitchen).

'Be it a small birthday function or big parties or wedding ceremonies, we offer catering services not only in Chitrakoot but in various districts of Uttar Pradesh,' Kamlesh Devi, co-ordinator of Apni Rasoi, told IANS.

'Honestly, none of us had ever thought that we could contribute to our family's income. It has all become possible with the team work involved in running Apni Rasoi. We also thank Varangana (a non- government organisation) that united and motivated us for launching the catering services,' she added.
